So I have this idea for a game that I want to try out. And having written the concept and tested the core mechanics, it is simply time for some level design. Not my strong side.
The subject of level design is huge! But I have found that I must restrain it to what I need for my game and no more. Those restrictions are:
-Small game
-Indoor environment
-First person perspective
-Slow pace
-Interesting/ Beautiful, yet not time consuming
I started out with an old top down sketch of a shooter level to find a direction.

I started out with an old top down sketch of a shooter level to find a direction.
This became, as expected, way too big and complex, but I punched out a "first look" just to get the feel.
Then I shifted the perspective of the bottom grid and blocked out a smaller level, with walls and corners that has a certain style. Not sure where it comes from, but it is more interesting than just square shapes.
And at last I have assembled some modular parts to build the walls and recreate the level from the above design. I think this is about a third of the total size of the game.
